IMAGENU Postdoctoral Researcher 975250 [to do research on the changing gender and marriage patterns in Uganda]

IMAGENU Postdoctoral Researcher 975250

Applicants are invited to apply for a three-year postdoctoral position that will start on 1 January 2019 to do research on the changing gender and marriage patterns in Uganda.

Place of employment: Department of Anthropology, Moesgård Allé 20, 8270 Højbjerg, Denmark.

The research project
This three-year position as a postdoctoral researcher will be part of the Danida (FFU)-funded project Imagining Gender Futures in Uganda (IMAGENU). The project runs for four years and is set to start on 1 January 2019. Partner institutions are the University of Copenhagen and Gulu University, Uganda.
The successful applicant will join the Department of Anthropology (School of Culture and Society, Aarhus University) and a research team led by Professor MSO Lotte Meinert. The IMAGENU project will provide a new perspective on gender and futures by placing marriage in Uganda and its decline at the centre, showing how this most fundamental gender relation implicates the filiation of children, livelihoods, education, health and people’s imaginations, expectations and hopes for the future.

The project will investigate the new forms of gender relations that are replacing formal marriage. Unlike previous studies, it will be comparative in four ways: it will examine both male and female situations; it will trace changes by comparing grandparents, middle-aged parents and young people; it will consider socio-economic (class) differences; and it will bring together studies from greater Northern and Eastern Uganda.

The overall purpose of this project is to enhance research capacity by generating new knowledge about how changing patterns of gender partnerships relate to child filiation, livelihood, education, and reproductive and mental health. This will contribute to the development of relevant social gender policies, and create debate in the general public.

Research
The successful applicant will have an individual research project relevant for IMAGENU, based on 12 months of fieldwork in Northern or Eastern Uganda.

Teaching
The postdoc will contribute to teaching at the Department of Anthropology at Aarhus University, and to PhD courses at Gulu University.

Research management
The successful applicant will take an active role in organising collaborative IMAGENU activities.

Qualifications and job requirementsApplicants must have a PhD degree in anthropology or allied fields.
The successful applicant must document extensive fieldwork experience as well as having an international research profile.
The perfect applicant will have done research in Uganda/Eastern Africa and will speak a Bantu or Nilotic language. He/she will also have done research on gender relations.
Applicants should have the ability to work independently as well as in collaboration within a research team.

The successful applicant will be expected, under the guidance of the team leader, to develop their research within the framework provided by the grant awarded. While some of the tasks and research frames are pre-defined, the postdoc will also be expected to contribute original research ideas. The postdoc will play a key role in organising research workshops, conferences, and research capacity-building activities. In addition, the successful applicant will collaborate in research analysis and publications together with the IMAGENU team, and will be expected to present their research at international meetings and publish results in peer-reviewed international scientific journals in a timely fashion.

The application must be uploaded in English, and must explain (max. five A4 pages) how the applicant would theoretically approach, methodologically plan for and anticipate their research findings for this project. This proposal must be uploaded together with the letter of application.
